Our floral design classes this fall include lessons on using a metal or wood sculpture in a “Fall Fantasy” design, using an antique or “old” container in a design, and creating a “Christmas Tray” design.
Our fall programs include speakers focusing on civic beauty projects by L.A. Guerrilla Gardening, conservation/landscape by Lisa Novick from Theodore Payne Foundation for Native Plants, a horticulture panel discussion covering seeds and bulbs, pest control, houseplants and plant propagation.
The Gardening Angels Group assist the fifth graders at Calvert Street School in caring for the 80 rose bushes on the school grounds. They meet on Wednesday mornings to help the students weed, feed and maintain their individual plant.
We maintain a library at Orcutt Ranch where members may check out books on gardening, floral design, landscape design, birds and butterflies for one month.
Members of the Smokey Bear Poster Contest committee will distribute fliers to local elementary schools to encourage students to enter the contest for the 11th year. In June, we had a 1st Place winner in the State, Regional and National level for the 2nd grade category and an Honorable Mention winner at the state level.
Our annual fall fundraiser is a tea where members contribute plants, collectibles, baked goods and baskets for sale followed by a luncheon prepared by members. Members and guests will be entertained by a dance group and a guitarist. The funds generated are used to support our three scholarships for horticulture students, our Gardening Angels expenses, the Theodore Payne Native Plant Foundation, Campo de Cahuenga and Friends of the Los Angeles River restoration project.
We support the San Fernando Valley District by hosting a meeting once a year, members support their fund raising bus tour, and several members are officers in the district organization.
The Scholarship Committee publicized the scholarships at Canoga Park High School, Pierce Jr. College and West Valley Occupational Training Center. Three $500.00 scholarships are awarded in June.
